Her manager signed her to MGM Records in 1949, and she released her first album two years later. It was an immediate hit and launched her music career to new heights. As a result, Pointer became the youngest female singer to have an album certified gold. She also became the first black female singer to be featured on the cover of Life magazine. Over the course of her career, she released ten more albums before retiring in 1971.
